About

Antone Cabin is a historic 1929 Forest Service cabin located in a beautiful open meadow at 8,100 feet elevation on the southwestern end of the Snowcrest Range in Beaverhead-Deerlodge National Forest. The small one-room log cabin sleeps 2-3 and offers a primitive backcountry experience with wood stove heat, propane cooking stove and lights, bunk beds with foam pads, table and chairs, and basic cooking utensils. The cabin lies within proposed wilderness, providing access to hiking, backpacking, and horseback riding. The 40-mile Snowcrest Trail offers panoramic views across the range. Antone Peak is a challenging 2-mile day hike from the cabin. The area is home to nearly 10,000 elk and a growing grizzly bear population; bears are frequently seen near the cabin, and food storage is mandatory March through December. Guests must bring their own water, sleeping bags, food, toilet paper, and garbage bags. A vault toilet is located 100 feet southeast. Horse pasture and corral are available. Access requires 40+ miles on gravel forest roads from Dillon, with potential snow any time of year. Winter access may require snowmobile travel up to 40 miles.

Directions

From downtown Dillon, turn east on Helena Street and travel 4 blocks to a 3-way stop. Turn south on Atlantic Street for about 1 mile, then east on Chapman Street for 1/4 mile. Turn left onto Blacktail Road (staying right at fork after 1/2 mile). Continue about 40 miles on Blacktail Creek Road (FR 202) to the signed Antone Station turnoff. Turn northeast onto Forest Road 325 and travel 5.5 miles to the cabin at road's end. Gate combination matches cabin lock. 4WD and/or chains may be necessary October through December.
