About
Perched at 10,003 feet in Medicine Bow National Forest, Spruce Mountain Fire Lookout Tower offers one of Wyoming's most distinctive overnight experiences. Originally constructed in 1938 by the Civilian Conservation Corps, the tower served as an active fire lookout until the 1990s when it was renovated and opened for public rental in 1997. The 55-foot tower provides 360-degree panoramic views of Medicine Bow Peak, Rob Roy Reservoir, Jelm Mountain, and the southern Snowy Range. The tower interior is equipped with propane-powered amenities including a heater, cook stove with oven, refrigerator, and lights. Furnishings include two single beds with mattresses, a table with four chairs, cookware, dishes, and cleaning supplies. A pulley and hoist system helps transport gear up the tower. There is no potable water or electricity; guests must bring sufficient water for all needs. A pit toilet outhouse and campfire ring are located at the base of the tower. The maximum occupancy is 2 persons in the tower itself (at least one adult over 21), with up to 10 total allowed at the site including additional tent camping below. The access road (Forest Road 500) is graveled but high-clearance vehicles are recommended. Summer temperatures average 70°F but can drop to 30°F at night.
Directions
From Laramie, take Highway 130 west toward Centennial. Turn south on Highway 11 through Albany. The tower is located 7 miles west of Albany on Forest Road 500. High-clearance vehicles are recommended.
