About

Located deep within the Medicine Bow National Forest at 9,265 feet elevation, Keystone Ranger Station offers a unique historic lodging experience in southeastern Wyoming. The cabin once served as the District headquarters for the Keystone Ranger District and has been carefully remodeled to preserve its historic character while adding modern amenities like electricity. The cabin sits in a clearing surrounded by mixed conifer forest with spruce, lodgepole pine, subalpine fir, and aspen. Wildlife viewing is abundant near the cabin, with elk, deer, moose, migratory birds, and occasional black bears frequenting the area. Recreation opportunities include hiking, fishing, mountain biking, horseback riding, and hunting in summer, with skiing and snowshoeing popular in winter. Several trailheads are an easy drive from the cabin. Due to the rustic and historic nature of the cabin, guests need to bring their own supplies including food, sleeping bags, pillows, towels, dish soap, matches, first aid kit, toilet paper, and garbage bags. During summer the cabin is accessible by car, but snow may persist until late June and the road can be muddy and bumpy. Winter visitors must snowmobile, ski, or snowshoe approximately 5-8 miles from the Albany Snowmobile Parking Lot.

Directions

From Laramie, take Highway 130 west, then State Highway 11 to Albany, WY. The cabin is in the old Keystone Work Center, located 8 miles west of Albany on Forest Service Road 542. Once on site, it will be the easternmost structure of the three, furthest from the entry road. Use the northern door that does not have a large porch. In winter, access is 5-8 miles by snowmobile, skiing, or snowshoeing from the Albany Snowmobile Parking Lot.
