Located deep within the Medicine Bow National Forest at 9,265 feet elevation, Keystone Ranger Station offers a unique lodging experience in a historic cabin that once served as the District headquarters for the Keystone Ranger District. The cabin has been remodeled to preserve its historic character while adding modern amenities including electricity, heat, and a full kitchen with refrigerator and stove.
The two-bedroom cabin sleeps up to six people on single beds and bunk beds with mattresses. The bathroom features flush toilets and showers, and drinking water is available on-site. A wood-burning stove supplements the electric heat, and the kitchen comes equipped with cookware and basic utensils. Outside, a picnic table and grill provide space for outdoor dining.
Situated in a clearing surrounded by mixed conifer forest, the cabin provides excellent wildlife viewing opportunities including elk, deer, moose, and migratory birds. During summer months, the cabin is accessible by car via Forest Service Road 542, located 8 miles west of Albany, Wyoming. Winter access beginning December 1 requires snowmobile, skiing, or snowshoeing 8 miles from the Albany Snowmobile Parking Lot. The cabin is typically open 11 months of the year and offers access to hiking, fishing, mountain biking, horseback riding, hunting, cross-country skiing, and snowshoeing in the surrounding national forest.
Directions
From Laramie, take Highway 130 west, then State Highway 11 to Albany, Wyoming. The cabin is located 8 miles west of Albany on Forest Service Road 542 in the old Keystone Work Center. It is the easternmost structure of the three buildings, furthest from the entry road. Use the northern door without the large porch. Winter access from December 1 onward is 8 miles by snowmobile, skiing, or snowshoeing from the Albany Snowmobile Parking Lot.
