About
Sproul State Forest encompasses over 305,000 acres of wild and remote forestland in western Clinton and northern Centre counties, offering some of Pennsylvania's most pristine backcountry camping experiences. The forest provides nine designated roadside campsites exclusively for self-contained RV camping along dirt and gravel forest roads. These primitive sites have no electric hookups, water, dump stations, or trash facilities, and self-contained toilets are required. Tent camping is not permitted at designated roadside sites. For backpackers, Sproul State Forest allows dispersed primitive camping throughout most of the forest without a permit for single-night stays. Backpackers can explore trails such as the Chuck Keiper Trail and Donut Hole Trail, camping at trailside locations following Leave No Trace principles. Campfires are restricted during the spring wildfire season (March through May) and when fire danger is high. State forest roads receive no winter maintenance and are not plowed, making winter access challenging.
