Swan Creek Campground

Closed — Closed for the season. Swan Creek Road closes December 2 to May 15 to wheeled vehicles. Road reopens May 16 for the main season through September 30, with limited service October 1 through December 1. During off-season closures, the campground remains accessible by snowmobile or other non-wheeled means.

About

Swan Creek Campground is located in the scenic Gallatin Canyon on the Bozeman Ranger District of Custer Gallatin National Forest in southwestern Montana. Situated 31 miles south of Bozeman at 5,800 feet elevation, the campground sits next to Swan Creek, a tributary of the Gallatin River, surrounded by a beautiful dense forest of spruce and fir trees. The campground offers 13 single-family campsites with paved roads and gravel parking spurs. Seven sites are ADA accessible. The Swan Creek Trail begins within the campground, providing immediate hiking access. The nearby Gallatin River offers excellent fishing opportunities for rainbow, brown, brook and cutthroat trout, whitefish, and Arctic grayling. Rafting and kayaking are popular on the river. The Gallatin Canyon is home to diverse wildlife including bald eagles, bighorn sheep, moose, elk, mountain goats, deer, coyotes, black bears, and grizzly bears. The Golden Trout Lakes Trail begins up nearby Portal Creek Road, five miles south of the campground. Bears frequent the area, so all food must be stored in approved containers.

Directions

From Bozeman, travel south on Highway 191 for 30 miles to the Swan Creek turnoff. Turn left and go a half-mile to the campground. From West Yellowstone, travel 58 miles north on Highway 191, turn right at Swan Creek turnoff and go a half-mile to the campground.
