About

Southeast Heckman Cabin sits on the southeast shore of Heckman Lake within the Naha Recreation Area, approximately 15 air miles from Ketchikan in the Tongass National Forest. Built in 1997, this two-room 16x22-foot Pan-Abode log cabin offers excellent scenery and solitude in a clearing overlooking the lake, backed by old-growth Sitka spruce and western hemlock. The cabin features barrier-free access from the dock to the cabin entrance and accommodates up to seven guests with two single bunks, two double bunks, and one additional single bunk. A wood stove provides heat, and the cabin includes a cooking counter, table, shelves, and cupboard space. Guests have use of a 14-foot aluminum skiff with oars for exploring the lake and accessing the Naha River, which is noted for steelhead and salmon runs. This is a primitive facility with no electricity, indoor plumbing, or cell phone coverage. Wildlife in the area includes Sitka black-tailed deer, black bear, marten, mink, beaver, and wolf. Access is exclusively by float plane, and the cabin may be inaccessible during fall, winter, and early spring when the lake surface is frozen.

Directions

Access is by float plane only. The cabin is approximately 15 air miles from Ketchikan within the Naha Recreation Area, located on the southeast shore of Heckman Lake about a half mile across from the inlet of the Naha River. Refer to USGS map Ketchikan C-5.
