Special Weather Statement issued February 8 at 1:57PM AKST by NWS Juneau AK

February 8th, 1:57 PM — 4:00 PM

After a series of shortwaves that brought rain and gusty winds over the past few days, a stronger front will approach southeast Alaska from the west on Tuesday. South to southeast winds will increase through the day Tuesday. Confidence is increasing for windy conditions with strong gusts Tuesday night into Wednesday morning as the front pushes west to east across southeast Alaska. Gales with storm force gusts will be possible ahead and along the frontal passage, especially along north-south oriented channels and along the coastal waters. A period of moderate to heavy rainfall will be possible with the frontal passage, but with the progressive nature of the front, flooding is not expected at this time. Another gale to potentially storm force low will quickly lift northeast into the Gulf and looks to push across southeast Alaska sometime later Wednesday into Thursday, bringing another round of strong gusty winds and moderate to heavy rainfall. Further details on the high wind and flooding potential for this system will be honed in on in the coming days. Looking further ahead, a cooling trend is favored to commence in the wake of these passing systems by late work week into the weekend. Snow levels will begin to lower and a colder outflow wind pattern could set up by late weekend. This could result in a return of snow for some coastal communities, especially across northern southeast Alaska. Further details on the pattern change and snow potential will be honed as the weekend approaches.

About

Jordan Lake Cabin sits on the southwest shore of Jordan Lake within the Naha Recreation Area on Revillagigedo Island, about 15 miles from Ketchikan. This rustic 12x12 Pan-Abode log cabin was constructed in 1965 and offers a peaceful backcountry retreat surrounded by old-growth Sitka spruce and western hemlock rainforest. The cabin sleeps up to 6 people with two single bunks and two double bunks. Access requires either hiking the scenic Naha River National Recreation Trail 4 miles from Naha Bay or 2 miles from Heckman Lake, or flying in by floatplane to Heckman Lake. While some floatplane pilots will land directly on Jordan Lake, many will not due to its small size. The access trail winds downstream along the Naha River through lush rainforest, offering exceptional scenery and wildlife viewing opportunities. The cabin is equipped with a wood stove, cooking counter and table, shelves, cupboard space, and basic tools. A 14-foot aluminum skiff with oars is provided for fishing on the lake. The Naha River offers excellent fishing for trout, Dolly Varden, steelhead, and salmon. Wildlife in the area includes Sitka black-tailed deer, black bear, beaver, marten, otter, mink, wolf, and trumpeter swans.

Directions

The cabin is approximately 15 miles from Ketchikan within the Naha Recreation Area. Access is by boating to Naha Bay and hiking 4 miles on the Naha River National Recreation Trail, or by floatplane to Heckman Lake and hiking 2 miles. Some floatplane pilots will land directly on Jordan Lake, though most will not due to its small size. Refer to USGS Ketchikan C-5 map.
