About
Signal Creek Campground is a drive-in facility with 24 sites located in the Ward Lake Recreation Area, approximately 7 miles north of downtown Ketchikan and 4 miles north of the State ferry terminal. The campground straddles Signal Creek and sits on the banks of Ward Lake, surrounded by old-growth temperate rainforest comprised primarily of western hemlock, Sitka spruce, and cedar trees. The Ward Lake Recreation Area offers seven hiking trails, with the popular Ward Lake Nature Trail meandering 1.3 miles around the lake. Freshwater fishing, canoeing, kayaking, wildlife viewing, and scenic vistas are favorite activities. A large day-use complex with picnic sites and shelters is also available nearby. At nearly 17 million acres, the Tongass National Forest is the largest forest in the national forest system, covering most of Southeast Alaska and surrounding the Inside Passage. The area provides opportunities to view wildlife including eagles, bears, and spawning salmon, with expansive vistas of fjords, glaciers, and mountain peaks throughout the region.
