About
Heckman Lake Cabin sits on a low knoll overlooking the lake, backed by old-growth Sitka spruce and western hemlock forest. Built in 1967, this rustic pan-abode log cabin offers a true backcountry Alaska experience in the Naha Recreation Area, approximately 15 miles from Ketchikan. The cabin provides two single bunks and two double bunks (sleeps 6), a wood stove for heating, cooking counter with table and benches, storage shelves, and basic tools including an ax, maul, and splitting wedges. Guests have use of a 14-foot aluminum skiff with oars for exploring the lake (bring your own life jackets; motors not provided). The Naha River offers excellent fishing for trout, Dolly Varden, steelhead, and salmon. Wildlife is abundant: Sitka black-tailed deer, black bears, beavers, marten, otters, mink, and wolves inhabit the area, with trumpeter swans frequently seen on area lakes. The Naha River National Recreation Trail connects the cabin to Naha Bay, winding 6 miles through pristine rainforest past Roosevelt Lagoon, Jordan Lake, and a waterfall. There is no potable water or electricity; treat lake or creek water before use. Firewood may be available but contact the ranger district to verify. This is a remote, wild location requiring self-sufficiency and awareness of bear safety, weather conditions, and water hazards.
Directions
Located approximately 15 miles from Ketchikan in the Naha Recreation Area, near the outlet of Heckman Lake at the terminus of the 6-mile Naha River National Recreation Trail. Access by float plane directly to Heckman Lake, or by boat to Naha Bay (large dock at trailhead) then hiking the trail.
