About
South Tailwater Picnic Shelter is a day-use facility located on the Des Moines River at the south end of Red Rock Dam, adjacent to the visitor center at Lake Red Rock, Iowa's largest lake. This conventional open shelter provides 20 amp electrical service, picnic tables, an outdoor grill, and nearby flush toilets, making it ideal for group gatherings and events. When not reserved, the shelter is available free of charge on a first-come, first-served basis with occupancy permitted until dusk.
The shelter is situated on the scenic south bank of the Des Moines River, offering excellent wildlife viewing opportunities. The area is known for abundant waterfowl including American White Pelicans during spring and fall migrations, and bald eagles from November through March. White-tailed deer, turkeys, and other wildlife are commonly observed. Lake Red Rock provides excellent opportunities for boating, water skiing, fishing for crappie, walleye, bass, catfish, and northern pike, as well as kayaking and canoeing along designated water trails.
The location is just 10 minutes from Pella, known for its Dutch heritage, and 15 minutes from Knoxville. The 15-mile paved Volksweg Trail stretches from Pella to the Des Moines River and Cordova Recreation Area, providing excellent hiking and biking opportunities. Events open to the public, those with more than 100 people, or involving live music or alcohol require a special event permit. Golf carts, UTVs, ATVs, and inflatable play equipment are not permitted without a permit.
