About
South Overlook is a day-use recreation area located on Lake Red Rock, Iowa's largest lake, managed by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers. The site is situated 10 miles from Pella, known for its Dutch heritage, and 15 miles from Knoxville. Hardwood forests cover the shoreline, providing shade and scenic lake views. The area features two reservable picnic shelters equipped with 20-amp electrical outlets, one rectangular and one octagonal in design. Flush toilets are located nearby, and a large parking lot accommodates groups. Unreserved shelters are available free on a first-come, first-served basis. Note that shelter occupancy is permitted until dusk only. Lake Red Rock offers excellent boating, water skiing, and fishing opportunities. Anglers can find crappie, largemouth and striped bass, walleye, channel and flathead catfish, northern pike, and bluegill. A wide variety of waterfowl migrate through the area in spring and fall, and bald eagles can be observed from November through March.
