South Overlook Recreation Area sits on the western shore of Lake Red Rock, Iowa's largest lake, managed by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers. The site features two reservable picnic shelters with 20-amp electrical outlets and flush toilet facilities, surrounded by mature hardwood forests that provide shade and scenic views of the lake. The recreation area serves as a gateway to Lake Red Rock's extensive water-based activities, including boating, water skiing, swimming, and fishing for crappie, largemouth and striped bass, walleye, channel and flathead catfish, northern pike, and bluegill. Miles of water trails for kayaking and canoeing stretch along the shoreline. The 15-mile paved Volksweg Trail extends from nearby Pella to the Des Moines River and Cordova Recreation Area, offering excellent hiking and biking opportunities. Wildlife viewing is exceptional year-round, with American White Pelicans migrating through in spring and fall, and bald eagles present from November through March. White-tailed deer, turkeys, and various small mammals are commonly spotted. The area is situated just 10 miles from Pella, known for its Dutch heritage, and 15 miles from Knoxville, the sprint car capital of the world.
