About
North Overlook Picnic Shelter is a day-use only facility located adjacent to North Overlook Campground on Lake Red Rock, Iowa's largest lake. This is not a campground and overnight camping is not allowed. The conventional open shelter provides 20 amp electrical service, picnic tables, an outdoor grill, fire ring, water fountain, and nearby flush toilets. The shelter sits within hardwood forests offering shade and scenic lake views. Lake Red Rock provides excellent boating, water skiing, and swimming opportunities, with designated water trails for kayakers and canoeists along the shoreline. Anglers can find crappie, walleye, largemouth and striped bass, channel and flathead catfish, northern pike, and bluegill. The area is located 10 minutes from Pella and 15 minutes from Knoxville. The 15-mile paved Volksweg Trail stretches west from Pella to the Des Moines River. Wildlife is abundant, with waterfowl including American White Pelicans migrating through in spring and fall, and bald eagles observable from November through March.
