Miner's Retreat Enclosed Shelter is located on Lake Red Rock, Iowa's largest lake, just 10 minutes from Pella and 15 minutes from Knoxville. The enclosed shelter offers 20 amp electrical service, air conditioning, electric baseboard heaters, a refrigerator, electric stove, microwave, and flush toilets, making it ideal for group gatherings and events. Occupancy is permitted until dusk. The shelter is situated along the Des Moines River where hardwood forests cover the lakeshore, providing shade and scenic views. Wildlife is abundant, with opportunities to observe American White Pelicans during spring and fall migration, and bald eagles from November through March. White-tailed deer, turkeys, and various waterfowl are commonly seen around the lake. Visitors enjoy excellent boating, water skiing, swimming, kayaking, and fishing for crappie, walleye, largemouth and striped bass, channel and flathead catfish, northern pike, and bluegill. The 15-mile paved Volksweg Trail stretches from Pella to the Des Moines River and Cordova Recreation Area. Nearby Whitebreast Beach offers swimming access. Des Moines is an hour away for additional attractions.

Directions

From Knoxville, take County Highway T-15 northeast for 8 miles. Turn north onto County Highway S-71 and continue 2 miles, following signs to the facility.
