Miner's Retreat Enclosed Shelter
This is a day-use facility only. Shelter occupancy is permitted until dusk, with check-in at 8:00 AM and check-out at 8:00 PM same day. No overnight camping. Reservations available via Recreation.gov. Events with over 100 people, live/amplified music, or alcohol require a special event permit.

Numerous roads remain closed due to flooding. * ADDITIONAL DETAILS... - At 122 PM CDT, Emergency management reported road closures due to heavy rain. Between 2 and 5 inches of rain have fallen. Additional rain this this afternoon may prolong or worsen the flooding, especially along Cedar Creek. - Some locations that will experience flooding include... Knoxville, Melcher-Dallas, Bussey, Hamilton, Marysville and Knoxville Municipal Airport.

Miner's Retreat Enclosed Shelter is a day-use group facility located on Lake Red Rock, managed by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers. This fully enclosed shelter offers climate control with air conditioning and electric baseboard heaters, making it suitable for use in various weather conditions. The building includes a kitchen with refrigerator, electric stove, and microwave, plus 20-amp electrical service and flush toilets. The shelter is situated on Lake Red Rock, Iowa's largest lake, surrounded by hardwood forests that provide shade and scenic views. The area offers excellent boating, water skiing, and swimming opportunities, with miles of water trails for kayakers and canoeists along the shoreline. Anglers can find crappie, walleye, largemouth and striped bass, channel and flathead catfish, northern pike, and bluegill. The 15-mile paved Volksweg Trail stretches west from Pella to the Des Moines River and Cordova Recreation Area. Wildlife viewing is exceptional, with American White Pelicans migrating through in spring and fall, and bald eagles visible from November through March. Pella, known for its Dutch heritage, is 10 minutes away, while Knoxville is 15 minutes away.
Directions
From Knoxville, take County Highway T-15 northeast for 8 miles. Turn north onto County Highway S-71 and continue 2 miles, following signs to the shelter.
