South Higgins Lake State Park encompasses 1,364 acres on the southern shore of Higgins Lake, a large spring-fed lake renowned for its exceptional clarity and recreational opportunities. The modern campground ranks as the second-largest in Michigan's state park system, offering roughly 400 sites in a heavily wooded setting of mixed pines and oaks. Sites range from standard 30-amp electric to full hookups with 50-amp service, water, and sewer connections. Each site includes a picnic table and fire ring, and pull-through sites accommodate large RVs. The campground features modern restroom buildings with flush toilets and hot showers, a sanitation station near the entrance with multiple dump points and water fill stations, and a camp store stocking firewood, ice, groceries, and souvenirs. Two designated swimming beaches lie within the campground area, and accessible walkways lead to the water's edge. Beyond the campground, the park offers a large boat launch facility with a protected basin, nine launch ramps, day mooring, and a boat-washing station. The 700-acre Marl Lake section provides 5.5 miles of hiking trails through less developed terrain. Reservations are handled through MiDNRReservations.com and are strongly recommended for summer weekends, with the booking window opening six months in advance.

Directions

From Roscommon, take M-18 south approximately 5 miles. Turn west onto County Road 104 and follow signs to South Higgins Lake State Park. The park entrance is at 106 State Park Drive.
