The combination of dry surface conditions, low afternoon relative humidity values, and gusty east to southeast winds will result in elevated fire danger conditions across northern lower Michigan the remainder of this afternoon. Sustained winds of 7 to 15 mph with gusts of 20 to 30 mph will be seen over northern Michigan this afternoon. Minimum relative humidity values of 20 to 35 percent are expected over much of northern lower Michigan. These conditions could lead to rapid spread of fires. About
South Higgins Lake State Park operates one of Michigan's largest campgrounds, featuring 404 modern sites spread across multiple loops on the southern shore of 9,900-acre Higgins Lake. The heavily shaded campground sits within a 1,386-acre park known for exceptional water recreation opportunities on this spring-fed lake renowned for its clarity and depth of up to 135 feet. Sites include traditional electric hookups and full hookup options, with some pull-through sites and 50-amp service available. Most sites are nestled under mature hardwoods and positioned close together, making the campground ideal for family reunions and group camping. The park provides one mile of sandy beach with four buoyed swim areas, accessible beach walkways, and a large boating access site with nine launches, a protected boat basin, and boat washing facilities. The camp store in the day-use area offers kayak, stand-up paddleboard, and pontoon rentals mid-May through September, plus firewood, ice, propane exchange, and concessions. Modern amenities include toilet and shower buildings, a sanitation station with four lanes, playgrounds throughout the campground, and pet-friendly beach areas. Beyond Higgins Lake, the park encompasses 700-acre Marl Lake across County Road 100, offering quieter fishing and paddling for non-motorized and electric motor boats, surrounded by 5.5 miles of hiking and mountain biking trails. Winter activities include cross-country skiing and snowshoeing when the park is accessible.
