About
Located in the Huron National Forest, Luzerne Horse Trail Campground serves as a trailhead and camping area for the Michigan Shore to Shore Horse Trail. The campground is specifically designed for equestrians, with a spacious parking lot that can accommodate trucks with horse trailers. Ten single campsites and one group campsite are available on a first-come, first-served basis with no fees required. The campground provides access to one of the trail's most distinctive features: the Big Creek/Luzerne boardwalk, which traverses a unique cedar swamp ecosystem. This portion of the Shore to Shore Trail is also open to hikers. The campground offers vault toilets during the operating season, though potable water is not currently available on-site. The site is gated in the off-season but remains accessible year-round, though facilities are not maintained during winter months. The location experiences light usage and provides a quiet base for exploring the surrounding national forest. In winter, the site is not maintained, with access roads and parking lots remaining unplowed, though the camping area technically remains open for those willing to access it.
