USE CAUTION - KNOW BEFORE YOU GO! The recent ice storm on March 29, 2025 and subsequent wind events have left many downed and damaged trees across the Mio Ranger District of the Huron-Manistee National Forests that have interrupted recreation opportunities on motorized and non-motorized trails. Crews are actively working to clear trees and debris from Forest Service roads and trails. Visitors should expect down trees and other debris on trails and roads – Please slow down and use caution. Access to areas may be limited on the Forest. This may impact the ability of first responders, such as ambulance and fire first responders, to respond to an emergency. Hikers, equestrians and motorized trail users can locate affected trails on our website at or call the Mio Ranger District Office at (989) 826-3252. About
Wakeley Lake Campground offers a true backcountry experience with 5 walk-in sites situated in the Wakeley Lake semi-primitive nonmotorized area of Huron National Forest. The campground is set in a diverse forested landscape that transitions from tag alder and conifer swamps to upland jack and white pine mixed with oak. Wakeley Lake itself is located relatively close to the parking area and features a mix of open water and swampy marsh areas along portions of the shoreline. The 2,100-acre semi-primitive area is designated nonmotorized, making it ideal for hiking, canoeing, and quiet wildlife observation. The area serves as important habitat for loons and bald eagles. Visitors may observe loons nesting from March 1 to July 15, though viewing should be done from a respectful distance to avoid disturbing wildlife. A loop trail around the lake offers opportunities to explore the varied terrain and observe the area's natural features. As a walk-in campground, all sites require a short hike from the parking area, providing a more secluded camping experience. The campground operates on a reservation system through Recreation.gov during the operating season. Campers should be prepared for primitive conditions and pack accordingly.
