Open — The modern campground is open year-round on a seasonal schedule. Following ice storm damage in March 2025, the Visitor Center and portions of the park remain closed indefinitely, but the campground and boat launches are fully operational.

Hartwick Pines State Park Campground sits within 9,335 acres of diverse forest land in northern Michigan, home to one of the state's last remaining old-growth white pine stands. The modern campground offers 100 sites with electrical hookups and full amenities including a dump station, making it suitable for RVs and trailers of various sizes. The campground underwent electrical system upgrades in 2025, modernizing the infrastructure. The park features 21 miles of year-round trails suitable for summer hiking, mountain biking, and winter cross-country skiing. The accessible 1.25-mile paved Old Growth Forest Trail allows visitors to experience towering pines that escaped Michigan's historic logging era. The Michigan Forest Visitor Center and Hartwick Pines Logging Museum offer educational programming about the state's forestry history, with seasonal naturalists providing nature-based programs during summer and fall. Located near Grayling, the park provides access to the Au Sable River watershed and offers activities including fishing, wildlife viewing, and morel mushroom hunting in spring. The campground serves as a base for exploring northern Michigan's forests and waterways, with boat launches available for accessing nearby waters.
