Cacapon Junction Hiker-Biker Campsite

Cacapon Junction Hiker-biker Overnight Campsite

Open

Open year-round, first-come first-served. Non-potable well water is available mid-April through mid-November; bring your own water outside this period or as backup. This is a trash-free site; pack out all refuse.

About

Cacapon Junction Hiker-Biker Overnight Campsite sits at Mile 133.6 along the historic C&O Canal towpath in Allegany County, Maryland. As one of many primitive campsites spaced roughly every 5-7 miles along the towpath, it serves long-distance hikers and bikers traversing the 184.5-mile trail between Washington, D.C. and Cumberland, Maryland. The site is free with no reservations accepted. Amenities are basic but functional: a chemical toilet, picnic table, firepit, and a hand-pump well providing non-potable water. The well water is available from approximately mid-April to mid-November; outside this window, campers must bring all water. Even when operating, the water requires filtering, chemical treatment, or boiling before use. Fires are permitted only in the provided firepit or on portable grills positioned off the ground. The campsite operates as a trash-free area, so all refuse must be packed out. Pets are allowed but must remain leashed. The site accommodates five to ten tents depending on group distribution. Quiet hours run from 10 p.m. to 6 a.m.
