About

Sorghum Hollow Horse Camp is a well-established backcountry destination in the Ozark-St. Francis National Forest, offering 15 family camping units designed primarily for equestrian use. The camp sits at the official trailhead for the Huckleberry Mountain Horse Trail, a 37.3-mile multi-use system winding through scenic Arkansas valleys framed by rugged mountain bluffs. Originally built in 1989 for horseback riders, the trails now welcome hikers, off-highway vehicle enthusiasts, and mountain bikers. Facilities are primitive but functional. The camp provides a vault toilet, an outdoor shower area where campers bring their own solar-heated water bags, a pond for watering horses, a loading/unloading ramp, and day-use parking. There is no potable water on site, so campers must bring their own supply. Sites operate strictly first-come, first-served with fees payable on arrival via cash, check, or the Recreation.gov Scan and Pay mobile app. The surrounding area offers diverse recreation including wildlife viewing, scenic overlooks, and fishing in nearby streams. A portion of FS Road 1604 (Shoal Creek Rd) is permanently closed due to a landslide, which may affect some trail access routes.
