About
Snow Peak Cabin provides a year-round base camp for backcountry enthusiasts high in northeastern Washington's Kettle River Mountain Range. Perched at 6,400 feet elevation, the cabin offers spectacular panoramic views stretching from the Cascade Range to the mountains of Canada and northern Idaho, along with remarkable sunrises, sunsets, and stargazing opportunities. This charming rustic log cabin, measuring 17 by 19 feet, was constructed in 1995 through a cooperative effort between the Snow Peak Shelter Alliance and the Colville National Forest, involving volunteers from multiple outdoor recreation clubs. Despite its relatively recent construction, the cabin maintains the feel and charm of a historic backcountry structure. It comes well-equipped with sleeping cots and foam pads for up to four guests, a wood stove for heat, a propane cook stove with basic cookware and utensils, table and chairs, and solar lighting. An outhouse and horse corrals are located nearby. The cabin is not accessible by vehicle and the surrounding area is closed to all motorized use. Winter access from December through spring requires skis or snowshoes for a 5-mile journey from the Kettle Crest Trailhead at Sherman Pass on Highway 20. Summer and fall visitors can hike, mountain bike, or ride horses approximately 3.2 miles from the Snow Peak Trailhead via Hall Creek Road. The cabin provides access to an extensive trail system including the Kettle Crest South Trail, Sherman Loop Trail, and Edds Mountain Trail, popular for hiking, mountain biking, horseback riding, and hunting during open seasons. Guests must bring all drinking water as none is available on site, and firewood conservation is important.
