Smugglers' Notch State Park Campground occupies a stunning location at the base of one of Vermont's most dramatic mountain passes. The narrow, winding road through Smugglers' Notch is flanked by 1,000-foot cliffs and closes each winter due to snow. The campground itself was relocated in 2003, with historic Civilian Conservation Corps structures carefully moved and restored to preserve their Depression-era craftsmanship. The 34-site campground includes 15 tent-only sites, 5 tent/RV sites, and 14 lean-tos spread through a forested setting that prioritizes privacy. Most sites are walk-in, requiring short carries from parking areas, though a handful accommodate RVs up to 28-34 feet depending on the site. Facilities include accessible flush toilets, coin-operated hot showers, and drinking water spigots throughout the campground. Firewood and ice are available for purchase. Bears are active in this park, so campers must secure all food and trash in vehicles or bear canisters. The location provides access to hiking and the dramatic scenery of the notch itself, making it a popular basecamp for exploring this corner of the Green Mountains.

Directions

From Stowe, take Mountain Road (Route 108) north approximately 8 miles. The park entrance is on the left at 6443 Mountain Road, just before the road begins climbing into Smugglers' Notch.
