Short Creek Guard Station rests in a corner of a small meadow surrounded by tall ponderosa pines with a creek running just behind the cabin. This historic USFS rental provides comfortable overnight accommodations with all the essentials: propane-powered lighting, heating, refrigerator, and cook stove. The indoor bathroom includes a flush toilet, shower, and sink with hot water during the operating season. Sleeping accommodations consist of one queen bed, with a couch available in the living room. The guard station serves as an excellent base for exploring the Malheur National Forest's two designated wilderness areas: Strawberry Mountain Wilderness and Monument Rock Wilderness. The North Fork Malheur River Trail begins just minutes from the cabin, offering opportunities for hiking, fishing, and wildlife viewing. Hunters also frequent the area during fall season. Guests should come prepared for a remote experience with no mobile phone coverage. Water systems operate only during summer months, typically mid-May/June through mid-October. Bears may frequent the area, so proper food storage is essential. Guests must bring their own bedding, towels, flashlights, first aid supplies, and garbage bags.

Directions

From Prairie City, OR, turn onto South Main Street. Follow to the junction with Bridge Street and turn left. Continue past the cemetery where the road becomes County Road 62. Follow CR 62 approximately 7 miles to the junction with Forest Road 13. Take FR 13 approximately 12 miles; the guard station will be on the right.
