About
Clyde Holliday State Recreation Site sits along the sparkling John Day River, providing a shaded oasis in the high desert of eastern Oregon. The campground features 31 electrical sites with water hookups, including one pull-through site, plus a primitive hiker/biker camp. Each site has a picnic table and fire ring. Modern amenities include hot showers and flush toilets available year-round, an RV dump station, and firewood and ice available for purchase. The park offers a nature trail leading to a wildlife viewing pond, horseshoe pits, and an outdoor amphitheater hosting interpretive programs during summer months. Mosquitoes can be particularly active from May through July. From late October through March, water hookups at individual campsites are turned off due to weather, though water remains available at the dump station. The campground serves as an excellent base camp for exploring the Strawberry Mountain Wilderness and the region's historical attractions. Nearby, the Kam Wah Chung State Heritage Site preserves an 1866-67 trading post and Chinese herbal apothecary with a fascinating collection of artifacts from Oregon's gold mining era.
