About

Starr Campground sits in a prime location in Malheur National Forest, offering easy highway access while maintaining a forested, peaceful atmosphere among beautiful ponderosa pines. The campground is divided into two levels: an upper section near Highway 395 and a lower, more secluded area deeper in the pine forest. Within a 7-mile drive are numerous trailheads leading into the Strawberry Mountain Wilderness. The Swick Old Growth Interpretive Site, featuring a hike through old growth ponderosa pines, is just a few miles away. Logan Valley, a short drive further south, provides excellent wildflower viewing and wildlife observation during spring, summer, and fall. The campground is popular with big game hunters in fall and early winter, with opportunities for mule deer, Rocky Mountain elk, and wild turkey. The nearby Murderers Creek area offers chances to see the wild horses that reside there.

Directions

From John Day, Oregon, travel south on US Highway 395 approximately 16 miles. The campground will be on the right side of the highway.
