About

Salmon Lake Cabin sits on the east shore of Salmon Lake on Baranof Island, 11 miles southeast of Sitka in the Tongass National Forest. This remote 15'x17' Pan Abode-style cabin accommodates up to six people with two double and two single plywood bunks, a wood stove, table with benches, and an outhouse toilet. Built in 1998 by volunteers from the U.S. Coast Guard, the cabin is accessible year-round depending on conditions. The cabin is reached via a 10-minute floatplane ride from Sitka or by boating 10 miles to Silver Bay followed by a 2-mile hike on the Salmon Lake-Redoubt Lake Trail. A mooring buoy is available at the head of Silver Bay. The cabin includes a small square-bowed skiff with oars for lake use. Visitors must bring sleeping bags, cooking gear, food, water treatment supplies, and all personal items. Salmon Lake offers excellent cutthroat trout and Dolly Varden fishing year-round, while the outlet stream has pink and sockeye salmon runs from July to mid-August and coho salmon from late August through September. The area provides seasonal deer hunting opportunities and hiking along the Salmon Lake-Redoubt Lake Trail. Brown bears are very abundant in the area. The lake may freeze mid-November through early April, making floatplane access impossible, and Silver Bay may freeze mid-November through mid-February.
