About
Santa Fe Trail Campground is located on Council Grove Lake, a 3,310-acre reservoir managed by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers in the Flint Hills region of eastern Kansas. The campground provides 35 reservable campsites with electric hookups, including 32 standard electric sites, one tent-only site, and a group camping area accommodating up to 75 guests. Campsites 1-13 and the east half of the group camp feature upgraded 50-amp electrical service. Facilities include flush toilets, hot showers, potable water, and a dump station. Each campsite has a picnic table and fire ring. A boat ramp within the campground provides convenient access to the lake, known for excellent crappie, catfish, and saugeye fishing. Council Grove was the first Kansas lake stocked with saugeye. The surrounding area offers nearly 2,700 acres of public hunting land with quail, prairie chicken, wild turkey, and deer. The Pioneer Nature Trail winds along the lakeshore through scenic terrain. Council Grove serves as the starting point for the Flint Hills National Scenic Byway, which traverses one of the best remaining remnants of the Tallgrass Prairie Ecosystem in North America.
Directions
From I-70, take Highway 177 south for 30 miles. Continue west across the dam road, then turn right onto City Lake Road. After one mile, turn right into the campground entrance.
