Kanza View

Open

Open for camping. The campground was temporarily closed during the 2025 season due to USACE staffing limitations but has reopened for the 2026 recreation season. Day-use at the picnic shelter operates from 6 a.m. to 10 p.m.

About

Kanza View sits atop a hill adjacent to Council Grove Lake, offering breathtaking panoramic views of the 3,310-acre reservoir. The campground provides five undeveloped primitive campsites best suited for tent camping. Large cottonwood and oak trees are interspersed with open grassy areas, creating a pleasant setting for those seeking a quieter, more rustic experience. The location features masonry vault toilets and a single water hydrant for shared use near the day-use picnic pavilion. There is no electricity at the campsites. The steep, rocky terrain surrounding the area limits direct access to the lake for fishing and boating, making this campground primarily suited for those who prioritize scenic views and basic tent camping over water recreation. Nearby attractions include the historic town of Council Grove and Tallgrass Prairie National Preserve, located 18 miles south on Highway 177. Several other developed campgrounds with additional amenities are available around Council Grove Lake.

Directions

1 mile north of Council Grove, Kansas on Highway 177, then west 200 yards on Lake Road (crosses the dam).
