About

Canning Creek Cove Park sits on Council Grove Lake, a 3,310-acre reservoir in the rolling grasslands of eastern Kansas' Flint Hills. The campground offers 43 reservable sites with electric hookups, including three group sites that accommodate 40, 75, and 100 guests. Sites provide a mix of shady areas and open grassy spaces suitable for games and recreation. Two boat ramps within the campground provide convenient lake access for boaters and anglers. Council Grove Lake is renowned for its fishing, particularly crappie and catfish, and was the first Kansas lake stocked with Saugeye. Nearly 2,700 acres of public hunting land surround the lake, offering opportunities for quail, prairie chicken, wild turkey, and deer. The Pioneer Nature Trail winds along the lakeshore through forested areas rich with wildlife and wildflowers. The lake lies near the historic town of Council Grove, a National Historic District marking the birthplace of the Santa Fe Trail. The area serves as a gateway to the Flint Hills National Scenic Byway, which traverses the best remaining tallgrass prairie ecosystem in North America. The National Tallgrass Prairie Preserve is located 25 miles south along the byway.

Directions

From I-70, take Highway 177 south for 30 miles. Turn west across Dam Road, then turn right onto City Lake Road and continue for 2 miles. Campground entrance road is on the right.
