About
Richey Cove Campground is located on Council Grove Lake, a 3,310-acre reservoir in the rolling Flint Hills of eastern Kansas. Built by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers in 1964, the lake now serves hundreds of thousands of visitors annually. The campground offers 43 reservable electric sites and one group camping area that accommodates up to 40 guests, with a mix of shaded and open grassy areas ideal for games and recreation. The lake is known for excellent fishing, with abundant crappie and catfish, and was the first Kansas lake to receive Saugeye stocking. A boat ramp within the campground provides convenient water access. Hunters can explore nearly 2,700 acres of public hunting lands surrounding the lake, with populations of quail, prairie chicken, wild turkey, and deer. Hiking trails wind along the shoreline and through forests, with Pioneer Nature Trail being the most scenic option. Historically significant, this area marks where the Osage Indians signed a treaty establishing the Old Santa Fe Trail. The nearby town of Council Grove, just 2 miles southeast, is a National Historic District with seven Santa Fe National Historic Trail sites. The campground also serves as a starting point for the Flint Hills National Scenic Byway, which showcases the best remaining Tallgrass Prairie Ecosystem in North America.
