Richey Cove Campground occupies a prime spot on the west shore of Council Grove Lake, a 3,310-acre Army Corps of Engineers reservoir created in 1964 in the Kansas Flint Hills. The campground features 43 reservable sites spread across multiple loops, including one group site accommodating up to 40 guests. All sites have electric hookups with 20/30/50 amp service, and each comes equipped with a fire ring and picnic table. Flush toilets provide modern conveniences, and the campground offers a mix of shaded and open grassy areas. Boating and fishing are the primary draws here. A boat ramp within the campground provides direct lake access, and the reservoir is stocked with crappie, catfish, and saugeye. Richey Cove also hosts the only designated swimming beach at Council Grove Lake, complete with a life jacket loaner program. Park gates close at 10pm, providing quiet nights. The surrounding area offers additional recreation including hiking along lakeshore trails, hunting on nearly 2,700 acres of public land, and access to the Flint Hills National Scenic Byway. The town of Council Grove, a National Historic District with seven Santa Fe Trail sites, lies just 2 miles southeast. The Tallgrass Prairie Preserve is 25 miles south along the byway.

Directions

From I-70, take Highway 177 south for 30 miles. Richey Cove entrance is located on the west side of the highway at the dam road.
