About
Sanish Campground is situated within Lake Sakakawea State Park on the south shore of Lake Sakakawea, the third-largest man-made reservoir in the United States. The campground offers modern amenities including electricity and water hookups at most sites, with some sites accommodating multiple camping units. Campers enjoy shaded sites beneath mature elm, ash, and other native trees, with scenic views of the expansive lake. The location provides exceptional outdoor recreation opportunities year-round. Lake Sakakawea is renowned for its fishing, particularly for walleye, northern pike, and chinook salmon. The park's full-service marina includes a convenience store, gas dock, pump-out service, and boat storage, with two boat ramps offering deep-water access to prime fishing areas. A fish cleaning station is available for anglers. The park also features a swim beach, multiple picnic shelters, playgrounds, sand volleyball courts, and horseshoe pits. The campground serves as a gateway to the North Country National Scenic Trail, which has its western terminus at Lake Sakakawea State Park. This 4,800-mile trail stretches from North Dakota to Vermont. Several multi-use trails wind through the park, offering hiking, mountain biking, cross-country skiing, and snowshoeing opportunities. The Shoreline Trail traverses the entire park along the water's edge, showcasing scoria formations, petrified trees, and coal veins. Sanish Campground also hosts two accessible seasonal camping cabins that sleep five people, equipped with air conditioning and small refrigerators.
