About

Lake Sakakawea State Park Campground sits on the south shore of the third-largest man-made reservoir in the nation, a 368,000-acre lake with more shoreline than California. The park offers a diverse camping experience with 149 electric and water hookup sites, 10 multi-unit sites, and 42 primitive sites distributed across several campground loops including Sanish, Fishing Point, and others. Two seasonal camping cabins are also available for rent. The lake is renowned for its fishing opportunities, particularly for walleye, northern pike, and chinook salmon. Anglers benefit from two boat ramps offering deep-water access, a full-service marina with 74 seasonal slips, a gas dock, fish cleaning station, and the Lakeshore convenience store selling bait, tackle, and supplies. The marina operates within an elevation range of 1805 to 1855 feet above sea level and is protected by a concrete breakwater. Recreational opportunities extend beyond fishing. A designated swim beach provides waterfront access, while miles of trails traverse the park including segments of the North Country National Scenic Trail, which has its western terminus here. The Shoreline Trail follows the lake edge for 2.7 miles past scoria rock formations and petrified tree trunks. The park's coulees are filled with mature elm and ash trees providing habitat for diverse birdlife. Additional amenities include picnic shelters, playgrounds, sand volleyball courts, horseshoe pits, and rental equipment including pontoon boats and kayaks.
