About
Sand Gulch Campground sits at 6,400 feet elevation in the Shelf Road Recreation Area, a renowned destination for sport rock climbing. Located 14 miles north of Cañon City on BLM land, the campground provides walk-in access to Contest and Freeform Walls featuring bolted limestone routes amid spectacular cliff formations. The campground has 29 individual sites and 2 group sites set among pinon pine and juniper vegetation. Each site includes a parking space, metal fire ring, and picnic table. Two vault toilets serve the campground. There is no potable water, electric hookups, or trash service; campers must bring water and pack out all waste. Pull-through sites at 5, 7, and 11 accommodate larger camp trailers. Beyond climbing, the area offers hiking, mountain biking, horseback riding, and 4WD routes. The Royal Gorge with its bridge, train, and whitewater rafting on the Arkansas River are nearby attractions along the Gold Belt National Scenic Byway.
