About

Sam Dale Lake State Fish & Wildlife Area sits in the rolling terrain of southern Illinois, three miles west of Johnsonville in Wayne County. The 194-acre lake serves as the centerpiece, surrounded by lush woodland and offering excellent fishing for largemouth bass, bluegill, redear sunfish, crappie, and channel catfish. Two boat ramps, docks, and floating fishing docks provide access, with a 10 HP motor limit keeping the waters peaceful. Two Class B/E campgrounds provide overnight accommodations in a shady, secluded portion of the park. Hickory Hollow Campground has 33 electric sites with pad lengths from 25 to 58 feet, while Lake View Campground offers 35 electric sites with pads ranging from 40 to 64 feet. Both campgrounds feature picnic tables, fire rings, drinking water, and restrooms. A sanitary dump station is available, and one campground includes a playground and an ADA-accessible site. Beyond camping and fishing, the area offers approximately 8 miles of equestrian trails and a 3.2-mile nature trail winding through the woods with three major loops. Hunting is permitted on 930 acres for archery deer, turkey, squirrel, dove, rabbit, quail, and furbearers. Three reservable picnic shelters with tables, water, and outdoor stoves accommodate day-use visitors.
