Special Weather Statement issued February 8 at 1:57PM AKST by NWS Juneau AK
After a series of shortwaves that brought rain and gusty winds over the past few days, a stronger front will approach southeast Alaska from the west on Tuesday. South to southeast winds will increase through the day Tuesday. Confidence is increasing for windy conditions with strong gusts Tuesday night into Wednesday morning as the front pushes west to east across southeast Alaska. Gales with storm force gusts will be possible ahead and along the frontal passage, especially along north-south oriented channels and along the coastal waters. A period of moderate to heavy rainfall will be possible with the frontal passage, but with the progressive nature of the front, flooding is not expected at this time. Another gale to potentially storm force low will quickly lift northeast into the Gulf and looks to push across southeast Alaska sometime later Wednesday into Thursday, bringing another round of strong gusty winds and moderate to heavy rainfall. Further details on the high wind and flooding potential for this system will be honed in on in the coming days. Looking further ahead, a cooling trend is favored to commence in the wake of these passing systems by late work week into the weekend. Snow levels will begin to lower and a colder outflow wind pattern could set up by late weekend. This could result in a return of snow for some coastal communities, especially across northern southeast Alaska. Further details on the pattern change and snow potential will be honed as the weekend approaches.
About
Twelvemile Cabin is a fully accessible rental cabin nestled in a canopy of young Sitka spruce and western hemlock on Twelvemile Inlet, Prince of Wales Island in southeastern Alaska. Construction of this cabin was made possible through mitigation funds from Alaska Power and Telephone and the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission. The cabin is accessible by vehicle via forest service roads and a 900-foot accessible gravel trail, making it less remote than other cabins in the area but still offering a unique lodging experience in the Tongass National Forest. Anglers will find excellent fishing opportunities in Twelvemile Creek, which flows into the inlet and has runs of coho, chum and pink salmon, cutthroat trout, rainbow trout and Dolly Varden. Crabbing and beachcombing are popular along the inlet. The area provides abundant wildlife viewing, including sandhill cranes, eagles, wolves, black bears, Sitka black-tailed deer, and migratory birds. An estuary just south of the cabin is particularly rich in wildlife. Hunters can take advantage of long hunting seasons for bear in spring and fall, and deer from late summer through late fall. Dog Salmon Fish Pass, a popular bear viewing site in August, is located approximately 10 miles from the cabin. Visitors are responsible for their own travel arrangements and safety, and must bring water, food, and pack out all trash. The cabin offers views across the inlet to the Twelvemile old growth reserve. Remnants of the area's logging history, including an abandoned camp and log transfer facilities, can be found on the nearby shoreline.
Directions
Twelvemile Cabin is located 6 miles from the Hydaburg Road turnoff, approximately 35 miles from Craig and 18 miles from Hydaburg. Turn left onto Forest Road 21 (Polk Inlet and Twelvemile Road). Follow Forest Road 21 for 5 miles, then turn left toward Twelvemile Inlet. The cabin parking area is about 1.5 miles ahead on the left. The cabin is accessed by a 900-foot accessible, gravel trail.
