About

Sagehen Creek Campground offers a quiet, primitive camping experience in the Tahoe National Forest near the Sagehen Experimental Forest. Located along Sagehen Creek at 6,500 feet elevation, this small 10-site campground provides a peaceful retreat adjacent to a scenic meadow with lodgepole pine shade. The campground is free with no reservations required. Each site has a picnic table and fire ring. An accessible vault toilet is available, but there is no potable water, trash service, or firewood for purchase. Campers must bring their own water and pack out all trash. The rough native surface roads and limited maneuvering space make this campground unsuitable for large RVs. Access requires navigating unpaved forest roads west of Highway 89 near Sagehen Summit. Expect mosquitos during early camping season. Camping is limited to 14 days per calendar year. Check-in is at 2:00 p.m., check-out at noon, with quiet hours from 10:00 p.m. to 6:00 a.m.

Directions

From Truckee take Highway 89 North for approximately eight miles to Sagehen Summit. Take a left onto 260 Road and go approximately 0.10 mile to a four-way intersection. Continue on 260 Road (middle road, not to field station) for approximately 1.5 miles. Take a left onto 11 Road for approximately three miles. At the bottom of the paved hill, take a left at the Sagehen Campground sign. Campground will be on the right in approximately 0.5 mile.
