About

Palisades Horse Camp sits at 8,300 feet elevation in a stand of pine, spruce, and fir trees in the San Juan National Forest, approximately 30 miles north of Pagosa Springs. This specialized equestrian facility caters exclusively to campers with horses and mules, offering 12 campsites equipped with corrals divided into sections to accommodate 2-6 horses depending on site configuration. Each corral includes feeding bins, and hitching racks are distributed throughout the campground. A water tank serves the horses on-site. The campground's primary draw is its direct access to the Williams Creek Trail, which leads into the vast Weminuche Wilderness and crosses the Continental Divide. The surrounding landscape offers panoramic views of meadows and mountains, with Williams Creek flowing nearby. The forest habitat supports abundant wildlife including bears, deer, elk, and moose, making it prime territory for wildlife viewing alongside horseback riding and hiking. The facility provides vault toilets and drinking water during the operating season, with a knowledgeable campground host on-site. Campers must bring certified weed-free feed as grazing is prohibited, and are responsible for maintaining corral cleanliness. The remote, high-elevation setting offers an authentic backcountry experience for equestrians seeking wilderness access.

Directions

From Pagosa Springs, at the intersection of Highway 160 and Piedra Road/County Road 600, turn north and drive approximately 23 miles to Williams Creek Road/Forest Road 640. Turn right and drive approximately 7 miles to the campground.
