About

Racetrack Cabin is a rustic one-room log cabin situated along Racetrack Creek on the east side of the Flint Creek Range in western Montana's Beaverhead-Deerlodge National Forest. Originally constructed in the 1930s to house miners, the cabin was later donated to the Forest Service and refurbished for recreational use. At 6,300 feet elevation near the Continental Divide, guests can expect a true backcountry experience with no cellular or internet service. The cabin accommodates up to four people on two sets of bunk beds and includes a wood stove for heating and cooking, a two-burner propane stove, basic kitchen utensils, table and chairs, and a battery-powered lantern. An outhouse with vault toilet is located outside. Guests must bring their own drinking water, bedding, propane bottles, D batteries, and all personal supplies. Firewood is usually provided but not guaranteed. Recreational opportunities include trout fishing in Racetrack Creek and nearby alpine lakes, hiking to the Pozega Lakes via a trailhead half a mile past the cabin, wildlife viewing for deer, elk, and blue grouse, and winter activities like cross-country skiing and snowshoeing. The last four miles of road are extremely rough with large rocks and ruts, requiring a high-clearance 4x4 vehicle. In winter, the road is not plowed and guests must travel 10-14 miles via skis or snowmobile.

Directions

From Deer Lodge, travel south on Interstate 90 for about 11 miles to the Racetrack exit 195. Turn west and drive about 1 mile, then turn south and continue less than a mile to Forest Service Road 160. Turn west onto Road 169 and continue about 16 miles. Allow at least 30 minutes to travel the last 4 miles due to extremely rough road conditions.
