About

Racetrack Cabin offers a true remote wilderness experience in the Flint Creek Range of western Montana. This rustic one-room log cabin was originally constructed in the 1930s to house miners and was later donated to the Forest Service and refurbished for public recreation. Situated at approximately 6,300 feet elevation next to Racetrack Creek on the east side of the Flint Range near the Continental Divide, the cabin is surrounded by dense forest with steep canyon walls and sweeping ridge-top views. The primitive cabin sleeps up to four people in two sets of bunk beds and is equipped with a table, chairs, basic cooking utensils, dishes, and a wood stove for heating and cooking. Firewood is typically provided but cannot be guaranteed. There is no electricity, water, or sewer; guests must bring their own water and pack out all trash. An outhouse with vault toilet is located adjacent to the cabin. The surrounding area offers exceptional opportunities for exploration and recreation. The Pozega Lakes trailhead is located half a mile beyond the cabin, with the lakes accessible via a 3-mile trail suitable for hiking or advanced OHV use (50-inch or less). Trout fishing is popular in Racetrack Creek and numerous mountain lakes. The area is known for hunting deer, elk, and blue grouse, with occasional sightings of mountain goats and bears (both black and grizzly). Winter visitors enjoy cross-country skiing and snowshoeing, though avalanche awareness and proper backcountry equipment are essential.

Directions

From Deer Lodge, travel south on Interstate 90 for about 11 miles to Racetrack exit 195. Turn west and drive about 1 mile, then turn south and continue less than a mile to Forest Service Road 160. Turn west onto FS Road 169 and continue about 16 miles. Racetrack Cabin will be on your left. High clearance 4x4 vehicle required; allow at least 30 minutes for the last 4 miles. In winter, road is not plowed and requires over-snow travel 6-14 miles from end of plowed road.
