Deer Creek Campground

Open — Open year-round on a first-come, first-served basis, though winter weather may make the campground inaccessible. Water has been removed for the season.

About

Deer Creek Campground is the most rustic area along the East Fork of the Black River in Apache-Sitgreaves National Forest. The East Fork meanders through a forested valley shaded by tall ponderosa pines and bordered by grasses, alders, and streamside hardwoods. Campsites are located a few steps from the stream to protect the Black River's unique riparian zone, but access to the river is easy as the undergrowth serves more to enhance the river's picturesque nature than to obstruct easy passage. This small campground offers 6 single-unit sites at 7,645 feet elevation, providing a peaceful and scenic retreat for campers seeking a more primitive experience. Each site features a rock fire ring and picnic table. The campground is accessed via Forest Road 249 and 276, approximately 13 miles from Alpine on wide, graveled forest roads. The area offers moderate use and is concessionaire operated.

Directions

From Alpine, drive two miles north on US Highway 191 to Forest Road 249. Turn west and follow this wide, graveled forest road 5 miles to Forest Road 276. Turn south and follow Forest Road 276 for six miles to the East Fork Recreation Area.
