About

Stephen F. Austin State Park lies along the Brazos River in Austin County, about 50 minutes west of Houston. The park commemorates the location where Stephen F. Austin established the first Anglo-American colony in Texas. The 663-acre property features bottomland hardwood forest with diverse wildlife including white-tailed deer, armadillos, and a variety of bird species. Camping options span three tiers. The 38 full hookup sites include 30-amp electric, water, and sewer connections with a pull-through layout shaded by mature elm and hackberry trees. The 39 water-only sites are designated for tent camping only, and the 25 primitive walk-in sites offer a more rustic experience with fire rings and nearby water access. All campsites have fire rings, and most have picnic tables. No generators are allowed at any site. Five miles of trails traverse the park, ranging from the scenic Brazos Bottom Trail to the Copperhead and Nature trails. A wildlife viewing station with multi-height peepholes sits along an accessible path. The park also offers screened shelters, a cabin, and group facilities including the Bullinger Creek Lodge and Dining Hall.
