About
Brazos Bend State Park sits on nearly 5,000 acres of coastal prairie and bottomland forest along the Brazos River in Fort Bend County, about 45 miles southwest of Houston. The park is famous for its accessible wildlife viewing, with American alligators commonly spotted along the lakes and marshes. The George Observatory, operated by the Houston Museum of Natural Science, offers public stargazing on Saturday evenings. Camping options range from primitive walk-in sites requiring a short hike to full-service RV sites with 30 or 50 amp electric and water hookups. The Burr Oak Camping Area houses 40 premium sites with 50 amp service, while Red Buckeye Camping Area has 33 sites with 30 amp hookups. All developed sites include picnic tables, fire rings, upright grills, and access to restrooms with hot showers. A dump station with three lanes is located near the park entrance. The park features over 37 miles of trails, including the fully accessible Creekfield Lake Nature Trail with interpretive panels. Fishing piers provide access to Elm Lake, 40 Acre Lake, and other water bodies. The park frequently reaches capacity, especially on weekends, so reservations through the Texas State Parks reservation system are highly recommended.
