Bastrop State Park

About
Bastrop State Park protects one of Texas's most unusual landscapes: the Lost Pines, an isolated stand of loblolly pines separated from the East Texas piney woods by roughly 100 miles of post oak savanna. This ecological island creates a distinctly different camping experience just 32 miles east of Austin. The park's facilities were built by the Civilian Conservation Corps in the 1930s, and the historic stone cabins and refectory remain popular draws. Camping options span the full spectrum. Piney Hill offers 25 pull-through full-hookup sites ideal for RVs, while Copperas Creek provides back-in sites with full or partial hookups that also allow tent camping. Deer Run caters to tent campers with water-only sites in a quieter setting, and Creekside offers walk-in tent camping for those seeking more seclusion. All sites include fire rings, picnic tables, and grills. The park recovered remarkably from the devastating 2011 Complex Fire that burned over 95% of the acreage. The forest regeneration is evident throughout, and the trail system provides excellent hiking through various stages of ecological recovery. Lake Mina offers fishing opportunities, though the main lake remains closed for vegetation restoration.
