About

Villanueva State Park sits in a scenic canyon where the Pecos River flows between towering red sandstone bluffs near the historic Spanish colonial village of Villanueva. Established in 1967 through a land grant, the park provides 33 developed campsites along the river under the shade of mature cottonwood trees. The campground offers 12 sites with electrical hookups and can accommodate RVs up to 40 feet in length. The park provides access to over 3 miles of the Pecos River, where rainbow trout are stocked in spring and fall. Hiking trails wind along the canyon walls to observation points overlooking the river valley. The park includes modern facilities with hot water showers, flush toilets in developed areas, and vault toilets at more remote sites. Each campsite features a picnic table, fire ring, and grate. Some campsites in the El Cerro campground area are available seasonally, with sites 26c-36c offered April through October and sites 20-25 available November through March. First-come, first-served sites remain available year-round. The park is located 21 miles north of I-40 via State Road 3, about 1.5 miles east of the village of Villanueva.
