About
Johnson Mesa Campground is a dispersed camping area managed by the Pecos-Las Vegas Ranger District of the Santa Fe National Forest. Situated at approximately 7,700 feet elevation in the mountains east of Las Vegas, New Mexico, the area offers a rustic camping experience for those seeking solitude away from developed campgrounds. The camping area provides basic amenities including two vault toilets, picnic tables, and grills. No potable water is available, so campers must bring an adequate supply. This is a primitive, dispersed camping area rather than a developed campground with numbered sites, which appeals to campers looking for a more remote experience. Horse and pack animals are permitted at Johnson Mesa, and no backcountry permit is required for entry into the adjacent Pecos Wilderness. Dogs must be leashed at all times while in the campground. The area sees light usage, offering good opportunities for solitude.
