About

Meade State Park was originally carved out of the Turkey Track Ranch in 1927 and now encompasses 803 acres of land and water in the high plains of southwest Kansas, just west of the Red Hills. The park's centerpiece is the 80-acre Meade Lake, known as the "Oasis of the Plains" for its crystal-clear waters. The lake offers year-round fishing opportunities with excellent populations of bluegill, channel catfish, flathead catfish, trout, saugeye, crappie, and largemouth bass. Motorized boating is restricted to fishing at no-wake speeds. The park features multiple campgrounds totaling 42 water/electric utility sites and 150 primitive campsites spread across several areas including Cedar, Lakeview, Cottonwood, and Sagebrush campgrounds. Tall cottonwood trees provide natural shade throughout the camping areas. Facilities include vault toilets, showers, restrooms, and a swimming beach. The Sagebrush Campground maintains both electrical and water service through the winter, while other campgrounds have seasonal water shutoffs but retain electrical service. For outdoor enthusiasts, the park offers nature trails for hiking, biking, and birding, as well as a disc golf course. The adjacent 360-acre wildlife area provides hunting opportunities for dove, quail, deer, turkey, rabbit, and occasional waterfowl. The nearby Meade Fish Hatchery offers tours by appointment. Located 13 miles south of the city of Meade on Highway 23, the park provides a natural retreat in the southwest Kansas landscape.
