Yellow River State Forest

Yellow River State Forest encompasses 8,900 acres in Allamakee County within Iowa's Driftless Area, a region that escaped glaciation and features dramatic topography unlike anywhere else in the state. Steep forested valleys, exposed limestone bluffs, cold-water trout streams, and native hardwood forests define the landscape. The Paint Creek Unit contains all developed recreation facilities and serves as the primary destination for campers. Four campgrounds provide 136 sites total: Big Paint (48 sites) and Little Paint (98 standard sites plus tent-only and group sites) accommodate general camping, while Creekside and Frontier serve equestrians with 32 sites. All are primitive with no electric hookups. Each site includes a fire ring and picnic table on level grassy pads. Vault toilets are located throughout the campgrounds, and potable water is available at the forest information center near headquarters. A rustic cabin with electricity and kitchen appliances is also available April through October. Over 45 miles of trails wind through the forest, including multi-use paths for hiking, horseback riding, mountain biking, and cross-country skiing. The famous backpacking trail connects five free first-come-first-served backcountry campsites. Paint Creek and its tributaries offer catch-and-release trout fishing. The forest supports diverse wildlife including wild turkeys, white-tailed deer, and ruffed grouse.

Directions

From Waterville, head southeast on County Road B25 for approximately 4 miles. From Harpers Ferry, travel west on County Road B25 for about 3 miles. The forest headquarters and campground entrance are located at 729 State Forest Road.
