About

Shuyak Island State Park is a remote wilderness destination comprising nearly 50,000 acres at the northern end of the Kodiak Archipelago. The park features a virgin Sitka spruce forest, miles of rugged coastline, beaches, and protected waterways ideal for sea kayaking. Four public-use cabins are situated just above the water's edge in sheltered bays: Deer Haven, Salmon Cove, Eagles Nest, and Mulcahy View. Each cabin measures 12x20 feet with four double-sized sleeping platforms accommodating up to 8 people. Cabins are equipped with a wood stove, firewood shed, basic cooking pots and utensils, first aid kit, and an outhouse. Fresh water is available from nearby creeks but must be hauled to the cabin and treated before drinking. A ranger station is located on Big Bay, and approximately 14 miles of established trails connect the bays. Access is exclusively by floatplane or boat from Kodiak, with multiple air charter services available. Visitors must be entirely self-sufficient as no supplies or services exist on the island. Weather conditions can be severe with frequent fog, rain, and high winds that may delay flights for days. Kodiak brown bears inhabit the island, requiring proper food storage. Summer temperatures range from the low 40s to mid-60s Fahrenheit.

Directions

Shuyak Island is located 54 air miles north of Kodiak Island with no road access. Access is by floatplane or boat only. Multiple air charter services operate from Kodiak to the island. Float planes land directly at the cabin locations in protected bays.
