Shuyak Island State Park
Open — Open year-round with reservable public-use cabins. Accessible only by floatplane or boat from Kodiak, 54 air miles south. Subject to severe and unpredictable weather conditions.
About
Shuyak Island State Park comprises most of Shuyak Island's 47,000 acres at the northern tip of the Kodiak Archipelago. The park encompasses a unique coastal forest system containing only one tree species: Sitka spruce. This virgin old-growth forest is interspersed with miles of rugged coastline, beaches, and protected saltwater bays ideal for kayaking and exploration. The park offers four public-use cabins located in protected bays along the waterfront, each built from cedar with bunks for eight, woodstoves, propane lights and cooking stoves. Primitive camping is also permitted throughout the park. A small trail network on the western side of the island provides access to salmon fishing streams, outer coast capes, and connects some cabins. Visitors will find excellent opportunities for sea kayaking in the protected inner bays, wildlife viewing, beachcombing, fishing, and hunting. Shuyak Island is subject to severe and unpredictable weather with frequent rain, large swells, high winds, and rough seas. Summer temperatures range from the low 40s to low 60s Fahrenheit with 4-6 inches of monthly rainfall. The park has no road access and is reachable only by floatplane or boat, 54 air miles north of Kodiak. No visitor services or supplies are available on the island. A state park ranger or volunteer may be present but assistance could be hours or days away, requiring visitors to be completely self-sufficient.
