About

Kodiak National Wildlife Refuge Cabins provide an exceptional wilderness experience on the remote Kodiak Archipelago in the Gulf of Alaska. The refuge's ten public use cabins are scattered across 1.9 million acres of pristine wilderness on Kodiak, Uganik, Ban, and Afognak Islands, accessible only by chartered floatplane or boat from the city of Kodiak, 252 miles southwest of Anchorage. Each cabin is equipped with Nordic-brand oil stoves for heating (burning kerosene, heating oil, or automotive diesel), pit-style toilets, and separate meat caches for food storage. Cabins lack electricity, plumbing, and cookstoves, requiring visitors to be self-sufficient. The refuge landscape features misty fiords, deep glacial valleys, lofty mountains, 117 salmon-bearing streams, 16 lakes, riparian wetlands, grasslands, shrub lands, Sitka spruce forest, tundra, and alpine meadows. Kodiak Refuge is world-renowned for its wildlife. The refuge supports approximately 3,000 Kodiak brown bears, more than 400 breeding pairs of bald eagles, and hosts runs of all five species of Pacific salmon. Visitors come for exceptional wildlife viewing, world-class fishing on rivers like the Uganik, Karluk, and Ayakulik, hunting for brown bears, elk, Sitka black-tailed deer, and mountain goats, plus kayaking, hiking, and photography. The maritime climate is variable with cool, wet, and windy conditions prevailing year-round, so visitors must be prepared for weather delays and bring waterproof gear.
