About

Woody Island State Recreation Site encompasses 112 acres on the north end of Woody Island in Chiniak Bay, accessible only by water. The site features the Tangirnami Cabin, a public use cabin situated on a scenic spit between Long Lake and an ocean beach. The cabin sleeps up to 8 guests with 4 wooden bunks plus a loft, woodstove heating, an outhouse, and a fire ring with axe and maul provided. The island offers diverse recreational opportunities including rainbow trout fishing in Long Lake, Sitka black-tailed deer hunting, whale watching, birding, and kayaking. Kodiak bears are present but rarely seen. The area holds significant historical importance, having been home to Alutiiq people, a Russian agricultural colony, and later a Baptist orphanage in the late 1800s. Visitors must bring their own drinking water or collect and treat water from the lake. Dead and downed wood and driftwood are available for the woodstove, but bringing firewood is recommended. Campfires are permitted in metal fire rings or on the beach only. The site is undeveloped and not ADA accessible.
