About
Buskin River State Recreation Site is a 168-acre park bordering the Buskin River on Kodiak Island, just minutes from both downtown Kodiak and the state airport. The Buskin River is one of the most productive fisheries on the Kodiak road system, attracting anglers from around the world to fish for sockeye and coho salmon. The park offers 15 campsites available on a first-come, first-served basis, with most sites suitable for RVs up to 40 feet and an overflow area for larger rigs. For hikers and mountain bikers, the park features a network of old military roads from WWII Fort Greely that wind through the spruce forest on the north side of the park, connecting remnants of WWII structures hidden throughout the area. The park also provides access to a popular local beach for beachcombing, tide pooling, and wildlife viewing. Two reservable picnic shelters are available for day use, along with a handicapped-accessible fishing platform near the river. Wildlife is abundant throughout the park. Brown bears frequently visit the river corridor, especially during salmon runs, making proper bear country safety procedures essential. Eagles, harlequin ducks, and harbor seals are commonly observed. The park's diverse recreational opportunities include fishing, camping, hiking, mountain biking, cross-country skiing, berry picking, beachcombing, and bird watching.
Directions
From downtown Kodiak or the ferry dock, head south on Rezanof Drive toward the airport for approximately 3.5 miles and turn left onto Buskin River Road. The park is about 0.25 miles down the road.
