Afognak Island State Park
Open year-round. Cabins available for reservation up to 7 months in advance. Maximum stay is 10 consecutive nights per month. Weather frequently delays floatplane access; pack extra supplies.
About
Afognak Island State Park protects 124,804 acres of remote Alaska wilderness approximately 25 air miles north of Kodiak. The landscape features dense old-growth Sitka spruce forests, rugged coastline, and numerous freshwater lakes including Thorsheim Lake, Waterfall Lake, Portage Lake, Pauls Lake, Laura Lake, and Pillar Lake. The park shares Afognak Island with private Native corporation lands that may require separate permits to cross. Accommodations consist of four public-use cabins ranging from 5 to 10 person capacity. Each cabin includes bunks, a wood heating stove, and an adjacent woodshed with firewood. Outhouses are located nearby. Water must be drawn from lakes and purified before drinking. Kodiak brown bears are present throughout the island, requiring visitors to maintain proper food storage and bear awareness. Popular activities include fishing, hunting, wildlife viewing, kayaking, packrafting, and hiking. Air charter services from Kodiak provide floatplane access to the various lakes and bays. Weather conditions frequently cause flight delays, so visitors should pack extra supplies and plan for flexible schedules.
