About
Afognak Island State Park protects approximately 116,000 acres of pristine wilderness on Afognak Island, located 25 air miles north of Kodiak. The park encompasses most of the island's eastern side and northern section, featuring rugged topography, dense old-growth Sitka spruce forests, and critical salmon spawning habitat. The northwestern region borders the Kodiak National Wildlife Refuge, while more than half of the island remains privately owned, requiring permits for access. The park offers four public use cabins for rent: Pillar Lake Cabin, Laura Lake Cabin, Discoverer Bay Cabin, and Waterfall Bay Cabin. The inland lake cabins are restored U.S. Forest Service structures accessible only by floatplane, while Discoverer Bay and Waterfall Bay provide saltwater access. Each cabin includes bunks, a table, and wood heating stove, with nearby outhouses and woodsheds. Lakes may freeze as early as mid-October, eliminating floatplane access during fall and winter. Wildlife viewing opportunities are exceptional, with resident Kodiak brown bears, Sitka black-tailed deer, Roosevelt elk, and numerous seabirds including the endangered marbled murrelet. Popular activities include hunting, fishing, kayaking, packrafting, hiking, and wildlife photography. Old logging roads within park boundaries are closed to motorized vehicles but open for hiking and biking. Popular floatplane access points include Thorsheim Lake, Waterfall Lake, Portage Lake, Pauls Lake, Laura Lake, and Pillar Lake. Saltwater access points include King Cove, Tonki Bay, Seal Bay, Phoenix Bay, Discoverer Bay, and numerous other bays around the island.
